    Generative AI animation is only as good as the person directing it. Oddtoe brings twenty years of illustration, motion design, and visual storytelling experience to every frame — AI handles the scale, and a non-boring human handles the design and the judgement. Makes it an easier process for you, the client.

    In my career, I have been a political cartoonist, a puppeteer, a data visualizer, and a street artist. But my foundational skill is illustration. Since 2006, Oddtoe has been around the block, working for such organizations such as National Geographic.  

  • How do you animate maps, charts and factual graphics?

    The integration of generative A.I. with traditional animation is a challenge. The design of non-fiction graphics, maps, and charts for a factual story is a challenge. Feeding the right data to a curiously-talented storyteller that happens to be a “bot”? That is a professional skill.

The animators who work or have worked for Walt Disney all seem to come from Los Angeles. Maybe that’s why movie animation all looks the same — either 2d Disney, 3d Pixar.

At least, anime has given us new imagery and story types.

But Hollywood animation isn’t run by animators, but by studio heads who bear the risk for generating original stories and intellectual property (IP).

Generative AI changes that equation. A small studio with the right tools and twenty years of animation experience can now produce work that would have required fifty people. That’s what Oddtoe offers. Not a cheaper version of the same thing. Something genuinely different.

What is an AI animation studio?

A studio that uses generative AI as one part of its animation pipeline rather than the whole of it. At Oddtoe the AI generates imagery and motion at a scale no single person could draw by hand, while the direction, design, rigging and edit are done the traditional way. Oddtoe is a Melbourne studio of animators, designers, fabricators and technicians assembled around each project, and the whole pipeline runs through it — direction, character and background design, generative AI animation, rigging, motion design and the final edit. Art direction, project management and quality control stay in one pair of hands from brief to delivery, so nothing is handed off between an account team and the people actually making the work.

What does AI animation production actually involve?

A hybrid workflow: generative AI animation for imagery and movement, advanced rigging for anything that has to stay consistent shot to shot, and traditional motion design for type, graphics and the edit. The mix changes per project — a branded loop and a factual explainer need very different amounts of each.

Can generative AI animation be used for factual or documentary work?

Yes, and it is where Oddtoe does most of its work — science, history, technology and deep dives into current events. Non-fiction animation needs accurate graphics, maps and charts as well as good-looking frames, so the motion design is directed rather than generated.
