Re-imagine the Desert Experience

Topiary Design: Desert Garden Parks

The Next-Generation of Public Spaces

Combining the Creativity of Data & Park Design

How is data used in the design of a topiary garden? In many ways — if one wants to be creative. Think of a real three-dimensional space. Gravity forces you as a designer to consider the floor, the ground in your thinking.

Then ask yourself:

“How can I achieve height in a garden design?” Sculpture is one way. Physical engineering is another. Think of archways, armatures, and trellising. These are some of the art supplies for a topiarist with a fondness for 3D design and fabrication.

The Topiary Experience

NEOM is the futuristic city plan for Saudi Arabia’s northwest. The ambition is to create a Red Sea community — a new Middle East experience akin to Doha, Qatar, or the UAE’s Dubai.

Rainwater in this part of the world is scarce, but not non-existent. Sun is plentiful. And people want to experience nature as they live their lives. NEOM is a re-imagining of those lives. An experiment.

A visual experiment like this one. Sketches and concepts get to new style of desert garden designs. The site in Saudi Arabia is unique on this Earth.

Early mornings and the after-dusk hours are important periods of time. Experiences of people in those cooler periods of solitude and calm are to be thought of. See how here.

Oddtoe specializes in 3d design. Organic 3D design. How is it that 18th and 19th Century garden designs are still the most common experience the public has with nature, especially in the cities? Let’s design something new, with the natural world in mind.

Artisanal botany then add the illustrated forms of Dr. Seuss. That could describe the influences I have in topiary design. Shrubs that hold specific shapes and sculptures that then play off of those shapes — well, then you can create such weird and wonderful garden designs.

Questions about

Topiary Design?

Is topiary garden design real?

Absolutely. Imagine a combination of landscape architecture and geometric experience design.  Ask the question: What could public parks and vast private gardens look like with new thinking, with new technologies?  Use nature but with a beautifully surreal effect.

Where in the world is experiential garden design most exciting?

Two places: Australia and the the new Middle East. By that I mean, the futuristic economies of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and all of Saudi Arabia. But tropical destinations like Singapore in Asia and Hawaii in the U.S. are also favorites.

What can topiary design look like in the Middle East or Australia?

Drier climates will be the norm. Add succulents to semi-arid topiary and you can see the creative potential.
